What the heck can Obama do about 'Black Issues'???
According to Marc Morial, the current president of the Urban League, Obama needs to specifically start addressing 'Black issues'.
Black Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed, three times as likely to live in poverty, and more than six times as likely to be incarcerated. In order to address these issues, the "State of Black America" report recommends that the stimulus package ensure that more "green" jobs come to the hood; increase funding for full school days for 3 and 4 year olds; increase funding for job training and placement; expand school day to account for working parents who don't have relatives nearby; increase funding for mortgage counseling and education programs for minorities; and implementation of universal health care and comprehensive system to provide blacks with more health education, prevention, and intervention.
The 'government' has done a terrific job addressing issues in the following areas:
Detroit, Michigan
81.6 % Black
22% of the residents are below the poverty line
6th highest number of violent crimes among the 25 largest cities in 2007
Almost 70 percent of the crimes in the city had to do with narcotics
71% of children are born to unmarried mothers
22% of students graduate high school on time
Baltimore, Maryland
64.7 % Black
Second largest homicide rate per 100,000 people with populations compared with cities under 250,000
A Republican has not represented a significant portion of Baltimore since 1931
38.5 % of students graduate high school on time
25% of the famines have no father present
Newark, New Jersey (where I was born)
53.46 % Black
30 % of all mothers have no husband present at home
26% of families are below the poverty line
Previously nominated as the most dangerous city in the nation
Camden, New Jersey
53.35 % Black
40 % of families headed by single mothers
33% of the families live below the poverty line
44% of the residents are in poverty
Per capita (yearly income per individual) $ 9815
I don't have time to list every major city but most of them fit the aforementioned profile.
ALL of these cities have been run by Democrats for the last several decades. Democrats continue to win elections in these cities and absolutely nothing changes. Yet still, some people still have the temerity to point fingers at Republicans and White America.
Now that we have a "brother" in the white house, the people at the Urban league expect things to 'change' for the better? What the heck is OBAMA going to do---especially because he is following the same course of failed actions? Some might even argue government programs and subsidies helped CREATE and MAINTAIN the current issues we have now!!! Isn't insanity trying the same things over and over again hoping (there's that word again) for different results???
They are proposing to increase the school day for all students??? Most of the students I've encountered with serious emotional and cognitive deficits are the ones that spend the least amount of time bonding with their caregivers. I haven't read the studies on this theory, however, it's applicable to almost EVERY case I've encountered as a school counselor. So the answer, naturally to liberals is to increase the time children spend away from their parents?
I'm not some outsider looking in. Trust me. I work in the hood. I've lived in the hood. I go to church in 'da hood.'
Here's how you nearly eradicate your chances of living at or below the poverty line: graduate from high school, get married before you have children and make sure you have children when you are at least 21 years of age. Over 80% of individuals who follow this simple equation are not living in poverty; and over 70% of the people who don't fit the aforementioned criterion are currently living in poverty.
I have a bright idea. Ready?
Let's stop having children out of wedlock. If you do have a child out of wedlock, raise your children to get married before they bring precious souls into the world. Let's increase funding for abstinence programs in schools. Abstinence-only programs currently get only 22% of federal funds designated for sex 'education'. BTW, that was the percentage under Bush. Obama's going to cut those funds...I'm almost sure of it---which is why there needs to be a push for these initiatives at the local level. Let's increase school choice vouchers so that students living in decrepit areas can have access to better private and charter schools. More access to schools will increase graduations rates in these areas.

One more thing... let's STOP selling our souls to Democrats ESPECIALLY when we have virtually NOTHING to show for it after DECADES of their reign.

Ha! I'm from Detroit. (technically Plymouth, but close enough)
The city council is so dysfunctional that it is actually kind of funny except that so many people are negatively affected. Detroit needs your prayers!

It's good Vanessa. You have to remember though that Obama isn't all Black. The other half is trailer trash cracker. He was raised 'white' by racist democrats. Oh and you forgot New Orleans and Chicago.

You can also add Washington, DC to the list since the school voucher program in the district is now at risk of being eliminated.
On a separate note, I would like to thank you for providing such vital, important information. I wish more people were as informed and aware as you and countless other members of your BLOG.

Enough said. Let's just simply tell the truth and shame the devil. As I read the responses I am encouraged to see AFRICAN AMERICAN thinkers are yet alive and well. If we did the research, which common sense tells us we really don't have to do, we would find most of our urban, inner cities are rife, with dysfunctional, idiotic, self-absorbed, pimp politcians who are only in it for WIFM-"What's in it for me." If they were running a business or some type of manager, (outside of the greed motivated CEO management we are currently seeing) they would be fired. Yet, far too many "constituients" keep putting them in office because they look to them as their source. Shameful. When are the thinkers all going to come together and tell the truth and stop the brainwashing from going on? Don't get me wrong, racism is alive and yet well. News flash...it will forever be as long as you have ten people on the face of the earth. Let's leave it on the parking lot and move on. It is what it is. We need to school the NAACP, the URBAN League and far too many other supposedly, help organizations on self reliance and self sufficiency. Oh, I forgot to mention Rainbow PUSH or whatever Jesse Jackson's group that has produced totally nothing. Now we do need assistance, but when hopelessness becomes helplessness, we are in trouble.
Whew...all I really wanted to say was, enough said. Tell the truth and shame the devil!

We share the same sentiment....
Whenever I hear a black person asking what Obama can do for them I want to scream "NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" at the top of my lungs. But I brace myself, take a deep breath and respond by asking them who has been in charge of the hood for the last few decades...
Those of us that have decided to free ourselves from the shackles of rhetoric have to go back a pull some more people out...this revolution that's brewing...won't be televised....

A friend sent me one of your blogs and I haven't stopped reading. I have learned so much. If only more educators cared so much AND were independent thinkers like you. I agree with your thoughts, but wish more people could hear you. Have you ever thought about getting a radio program? It may not be possible because Obama is closing down all views but his own, but I would listen to your pearls of wisdom. PLEASE do't stop writing. If your singing is half as good as your writing, your an angel!
